Becoming a substitute teacher is not as difficult as you might think. There are often different requirements in each educational district, so check with your local school board to be sure that you know exactly what you need to do. The process can take some time, so be sure and get things started early, so that you don't miss out on any teaching opportunities. Many areas require that you have a college degree, this degree does not have to be in education, it can be in any field. You may also be required to take a competency test, again this may not be the case in every school district. Before you can be approved to substitute teach, you will likely need to agree to a thorough background check. The rise in sexual abuse cases that happen in and out of school have made it a necessity in trying to insure the safety of the children. If you have not been convicted of any crimes, then there should not be any reason to worry about this step in the process.Adter you are approved to substitute teach in your district, you will need to fill out the forms for which schools you will be available for. This gives you the chance to choose grades and classes that you you have knowledge in, so that you feel comfortable teaching those classes.Advantages of Substitute TeachingSubstitute teaching allows you to work when it is convenient for you. If you have other appointments or plans, you can always say that you are not available that day. Substitute teaching also gives you some experience towards teaching. This is very beneficial if you are planning to become a teacher or are looking into another educational career.Disadvantages of Substitute TeachingThere may not be enough work at times. If you are looking for a steady pay check this may not be a great option for you. As a substitute teacher you have to deal with the kids. Subs are often not treated with the respect they deserve by the students. You will need to be tolerant and patient to get through your first few days as a substitute teacher. After the children get to know you and your teaching style, they will most likely calm down and the classroom experience will be nicer for everyone.Substitute teaching can be rewarding. Not every student will touch you, but there are sure to be a few that make an impact during your time as a substitute.
